Issue 8 fully thumbnailed!
Issue 7 hasn't even come back from the printers yet and I am stoked to announce that Issue 8 has now been fully thumbnailed.
It would be an understatement to point out how pumped I am for this issue. It will be a massive departure stylistically for the series. Drawn in a more cartoony fashion, told with a bit more humour, and then to boot it'll be FULL COLOR! (C'mon, that deserved full caps!)
The story has really flowed for this book. It has definitely been the easiest, and most fun to write of all the books to date, and I'm thinking when it comes to doing the art this is gonna be awesome fun!
So with the thumbnails complete, this puts us the furthest in front we've been production wise on a book to date. Will be hoping to use this time to really give this baby some polish (and this probably helps as I'm going to be coloring the book as well :) )

From Above on Instagram
Hey folks!
For those interested, From Above is also on Instagram! You can keep up with all the daily sketches by following us Instagram ( https://instagram.com/fromabovecomic/ ).
Of course there will always be more detailed content here on the blog but our Instagram account provides a nice easy way to sit back and follow some pretty (or at least we hope so) pictures as they come through.

On the horizon...
Awesome news the other day.
Looks like there may be a project in the works with awesomely talented writer, Ryan K Lindsay! Obviously can't say anything about what this might be at this stage, other than that I'm seriously pumped and the wheels are turning.

Bendigo Record, Comic and Toy Fair
This coming Sunday the From Above crew are off to Bendigo for our first event of the year. We did this event last year and had a lot of fun. This year looks to be bigger with a lot of comic creators tabling there. Will be nice kicking off convention season with a nice and accessible event! Hope some of you can make it!

Issue 7 complete!
Issue 7 is done and dusted!
Just one final editing pass and it'll be out the door. This book is definitely the one I'm most proud of to date in terms of writing and artwork. It seems like each issue more and more work goes into producing the book so I'm hoping that translates to an improved final product.
I'm pretty proud of the fact that for seven issues now we've held to our quarterly deadline and goal going forward. I am mixing up a little though now with the book down the track.
Firstly, obviously there is the full color, stand alone issue 8 which I'm pretty excited about. This gives us a big chance to mix things up and have a bit of fun with the book.
Other news relates to the trade paperback which we've now decided to push back towards the end of the year. Whilst its obviously something we want to do, there is quite a bit of work involved in this and also the addition of a planned exclusive story. That said, a decision was made to focus more on the day to day of the quarterly floppies as this is the core of the title. Diving into making the trade at this stage would just hurt the regular releases.
Then of course there's the question of the series as a whole going forward. We've got convention season coming up and we are obviously eager to see if the book can back up to what was a phenomenal first year and hopefully build on that. There are so many projects we'd love to be working on but there's only so much time that we can devote to them. This book obviously takes precedent and the hope is that we'll keep it going for a long time to come, but obviously as any creator knows there is a real knack to being able to continually grow your readership.
Suffice to say this will be a very interesting year. We've got a few Supanova Expos to do (Melbourne and Sydney), as well as ComicGong, Homecooked Festival and some other smaller events. We are also in talks with a few other event organisers to see what else we might attend, and there is also the possibility we may be journeying to SDCC as part of a panel there.
Fingers crossed :)

Issue 8 - Full Colour!
We are pretty excited to announce that with the upcoming Issue 8 we will be trying something different. Issue 8 will be a stand alone book and it will be in (wait for it!)....full colour! Yep, this issue will be full colour and drawn in a more cartoony style as you can see by the attached image. It's something we hope to have a bit of fun with and really hope you all will too!
Deskshot WIP - Issue 7
In the home stretch. Melbourne City has really been kicking my butt with this issue but I think the final product will really be worth it. Finalising everything to send off to the printers next week, and then also we'll have a little announcement to make shortly regarding issue 8. stay tuned.

Sketch of the Day 14 - Zombies vs Robots
Today's sketch of the day. Yet again my obsession with ZvR seems to continue. Of course I couldn't help myself...I had to put a dog in the picture :)
Desk shot - WIP - Issue7
In the home stretch with the inking on the latest issue, with the book on track to head off to the printers by the 20th. Really liking how this issue is coming together. Feel like the art and writing have both lifted with this installment (which makes it about 60% of the way to where I'd like to be in terms of quality).
Definitely finding though that sequential art is the best way to really push your development. There's nowhere to hide and the story dictates what angle / content your draw. I find myself outside my comfort zone a lot with this, which for me is a great place to be.

Latest ZvR competition
Talk about cutting it fine! Just saw the latest ZvR art comp and the deadline was....today!!! Had to enter so I quickly put this together. Way more rushed than I would have liked. Theme was ZvR as a video game :)
Needless to say, this will substitute as my sketch of the day!

Sketch of the day 13 - Ned Kelly
Unlikely to get the chance tomorrow to do a sketch of the day so churning one out at the end of this one. Decided to give it a bit of an Australian feel.

Sketch of the Day 12 - Oreo meets Admiral Ackbar
After feeling a little guilty not doing a sketch yesterday (lots of work on Issue 7 took priority), I had to make sure I did one today. I had the perfect inspiration too!
Last week I bought my dog Oreo a Star Wars Greedo chew toy. Ironically, Oreo is black and white (just like Han's outfit in Star Wars). So, hence, Greedo came out second best. I think it was just a few hours before his poor rodian face was chewed off.
Now, Oreo is constantly thinking I am trying to trick him and lock him outside (a trap you might say!) so the natural next chew toy was today...Admiral Ackbar. To date, I am pleased to report that the Admiral is still in one piece but the squeaking from the other room has gone suspiciously quiet in the last hour...

Desk shot WIP - Issue 7
It's amazing how three months for each issue seems like it should be a heap of time yet somehow or other it always seems that I use every once of that time to complete each book. I like to use the excuse that this is just a free time gig but the truth is I think I manage to find a way, each issue to spend more and more time on it.
I'm hoping that this is translating into a better product each time. The art does seem to be improving and I feel the writing is where things have advanced the most. I'm actually quite proud of this first issue of the origin story and feel it's my best crack at pretending to be a writer.
Anyway, here's a sneak peak at the progress on the inks. I teased the pencil development on this earlier and figured it would be nice to follow up with the inks. Hope you dig.
Now, back to work!

New Intern
There's a new intern in the studio today. He doesn't do a lot and he's a bit of a distraction, but he sure is cute :)
Event Schedule this year
As convention season approaches we thought we'd start to list the events we will be tabling at this year. This is not a finite list at the moment as several other events may be added to the list depending on how things fall into place. We look forward to catching up with a lot of the fine folk we met last year and hopefully meeting a few new ones!
Variant Covers
Artwork is complete and files will be sent off to the printers this week for the variant cover editions of Issues 2 and 3. Meanwhile, work on Issue 7 is progressing solidly with the inks now half done for the book.
